With the BJP intensifying campaign for the 2019 general election across the country, its Uttarakhand unit is also leaving no stone unturned to retain the state’s five Lok Sabha seats.

The BJP state unit is making booth-level connect with voters after the ruling party asked its national joint secretaries to regularly visit all states to maintain dialogue with party cadres.

Retaining the Lok Sabha seats it won in the 2014 election is a challenge for the BJP. With rumoured impact of demonitisation and GST, the party is keeping close tab on every seat.

Uttarakhand may not be a big platform as it has only five Lok Sabha seats, yet senior leaders aren’t leaving any stone unturned to retain them in 2019.

In 2014 elections, BJP leaders BC Khanduri won from Pauri Garhwal, Bhagat Singh Koshyari from Nainital, Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank from Haridwar, Mala Rajyalaxmi Shah from Tehri and Ajay Tamta from Almora.

Saudan Singh, BJP national joint secretary, is in the hill state to review booth-level preparations. Insiders said he even visited a booth and did pep talk with party workers for accelerating activity and connecting with voters.

“The focus of senior leaders is on booth-level exercises. Saudan Singh Ji visited a booth here and interacted with ground workers taking cognizance of party’s activities,” a BJP leader said requesting anonymity.

National joint general secretary Shivprakash had been visiting Uttarakhand frequently in the past few months. In coming months, visit of remaining two national joint secretaries V Satish and BL Santosh is likely. Meanwhile, national general secretary Ram Lal is also slated to visit the state.

After BJP chief Amit Shah’s visit on September 19 and 20, the state organisation has become active. State general secretary Sanjay Kumar is particularly keeping stock of every details and monitoring election related activities.

The movement of national general secretaries is also to ensure cooperation among party workers. Conveners and co-convenors are deployed to diffuse the differences between party leaders.

Sources say differences between Dehradun district unit president Umesh Aggarwal and MLA Rajpur Khazan Das is boiling while the situation in Haridwar is severe where cabinet ministers Madan Kaushik and Stapal Maharaj are face to face.

Senior party leaders do not want these issues to become a hurdle for the upcoming elections.

Ajay Bhatt, party state unit president, told HT, “Review is extremely important for which our national joint secretaries are coming here in every three months. Their presence stimulates our work to perform better.”
